Seoul Search
I spent 6 days in Seoul in early December and the city was in full Christmas mode. We went with Netflix Australia for the release of Squid Game Season 2. I then extended my stay to explore my city more. It was the perfect balance between work and play. I traveled with a group from Netflix parts, and once it was wrapped I stayed solo. It was great to be able to spend time alone with a community mix to do my best. And as someone who hates being alone, this was a great way to make it easier.
Where to stay
I started with The Westin Josun, which was the theme after the squid match. I was literally checked into squid gameguard because I was with Netflix. Unrealistic. After that I moved to L’Escape Hotel, a luxurious French-style boutique hotel where I booked myself. The lobby was dripping with fairy light, with bikes and Christmas trees! And with the holiday vibe, it honestly felt like I stepped into a little Parisian Christmas movie.
The best neighborhood to check out
Seongsu-Dong is a very cool area. It’s so popular for shopping and food, there’s a reason why people keep coming back. I didn’t try the famous salted bread from Jayeondo Sogeumpang, but it’s definitely a hot spot. However, I went to the loop and had the best vegan chocolate cake and matcha I’ve ever had. Also, what about new olives in there? It’s on the 4th floor of absolute chaos in the best way. Each level somehow gets better. Skincare heaven.
Going around town
At first, I loved chatting with drivers and picking up local tips, so I thought I would rely on Uber as usual. However, I downloaded the Naver app and changed my entire trip. It is very accurate and shows exactly where you stand on the train platform and how long each transfer takes. I used trains and buses all the time, and by the end I felt like a local.
Packaging essentials
I was there in the winter so you’ll shop a lot – hand cream (your hands and nails are very dry), thermals, and a spacious tote bag.
Your favorite soul street style look
My red pants and a gold puff jacket combo. It’s difficult to bring color to winter outfits, but this made me feel so good!
Find a vegan diet
As a vegan, I received many warnings about how difficult it is to eat in Korea, but I found some great spots. Both the Vegan Kitchen and Vegan Insa were perfect for traditional Korean cuisine with a vegan twist. But what stands out for me was the vegan egg sandwich from Baifu. It’s located on top of the mountain and the surrounding streets are gorgeous, so it’s truly unforgettable!
Best buy
I can’t just choose one. I made a custom perfume with Kinfolk. I just discovered both spots by walking around and liked that they loved what was not planned.
Travel Soundtrack
Music always sets the mood for me. On this trip I was listening:
- Charm – Clairo
- Witch – Kaitranada ft Childish Gambino
- At night – Childish Gambino
- Chateau – DJO
- Why do I cry – Margo Gryan
- We Can’t Be Friends – Ariana Grande
- Deep in its depths – Berlios
- Sensual – Clown Pikaoni
- Darling – Esbe
Hot Tips
I walk anywhere. Even if it’s cold, the city is most experienced on foot. Take the train. From cute shops to cute shops hiding side streets to whole beauty that doesn’t appear on the map, you’ll stumble across the most random and wonderful places. These unplanned discoveries were some of my favorite parts of the trip.
