35 years of Motor City Comic Con

Marine Åkerman has a soft spot in the mind for Detroit and in her cinematography.

Guardianwill be discussed and screened at the Emazinnobi Theatre on Friday, May 16th at 7:30pm, followed by an exclusive after-hours party. This is just one of countless events, attractions and contests for fans of the 35th Motor City Comic-Con, from Friday, May 16th to Sunday, May 18th to Sunday, May 18th to Sunday, May 18th.

Located in the heart of Novi’s suburban collection show place, Comic Con was a fantasy empire in southeastern Michigan for pulp fiction, anime, cosplay, panel discussions and one-on-one encounters with pop culture celebrities. Therefore, the event was expanded twice a year in May and November.

“We consistently launched two shows after Covid in October 2021,” explains Beth Burland. Beth Burland began Detroit’s first comic book Extravaganza at VFW Hall in 1990, serving as co-manager of Samantha Yankee and Comic Con. “We’re a week away from the May show and we’re already working on November,” recalls the Yankee. “We’ve been working on it for a while. There’s a lot of it, but the community demands it, so we’ll provide it.”

The film they arranged for screening for the film promises to be the highlight of May Eplavaganza, and Okerman says he can’t wait for her to see (male).

“It’s the best,” she gets excited. “I love to have screenings because you have real fans who want to see the film. It feels like a really warm welcome. Maybe they’ve seen it before, so they know what they’re doing and they’re excited.”

She said, “It’s like going on stage when you’re a musician. You do all the work behind the scenes, then you’re there with your fans, presenting it, being a part of it, feeling the energy. I love it.”

But Robin might yell, “Holy (fill in the blank), Batman!” That’s just the beginning. Åkerman is brilliant with film fans for Emagine’s opening night, but back at the Suburban Collection Showplace, WWE and TNA tag team wrestling champions Jeff and Matt Hardy are known as Hardy Boyz.

But, undoubtedly, the most interesting celebrity scheduled for Novi is two-time Oscar nominee for the Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Renner returned to public and recovered from the horrifying 2023 accident on a major year day, and was crushed by a 7-ton snowplow, destroying more than 38 bones inside her body. Among the new features this May is an attraction called “You Are a Voice Actor,” which is called the fax machine at the professional sound booth. “I think this is really cool,” Burland says. “They have over 60 different scripts for what you want to record. You record your lines and they are edited with music and sound effects.”

But of course, the bedrock of every comic is a collection of graphic novels and comic book artists from around the world, uniting with fans who adore their work. Few people know this better than Detroit’s own comic panel pen pioneer Abel Jones. Abel Jones worked for both Marvel and DC Comics in his storied career, supporting the early version of Black Panther. He is scheduled to attend Comic Con next week, and says he still shares Åkerman’s enthusiasm while appearing at countless events over the decades.

“Before the pandemic, I was doing it for at least 10 years a year,” Jones says. “I enjoyed it so much. I said, ‘Man, everyone loves what I give them.’ People ask me, “What was it like working with Stan Lee? I enjoy the person who came and told me all the strange situations they had.

Comic-Con celebrates the milestone in its 35th year, but Burland and the Yankees have little time to admit it. “Who can’t tell you, but we’ve already sent out a contract in May next year,” reveals the Yankee. “As soon as one show ended, I got a two-day rest, hang out at home and then came back. I have to sleep after the show just to close the real world and eat potatoes.”

Motor City Comic Con will be held from May 16th to 18th. Opening hours are from noon to 7pm on Fridays, from 10am to 8pm on Saturdays, and from 10am to 5pm on Sundays. Tickets are available starting at $35 for adults and $5 for kids at Motorcitycomiccon.com.
