John Ford, an iconic director known for films such as; stagecoach, grapes of wrath, my beloved clementine, searchers And so on and so forth, which will be the theme of the next TCM podcast. The conspiracy thickensannounced Wednesday.
“Deciphering John Ford,” hosted by Ben Mankiewicz, will premiere on June 6th. The podcast’s fifth season will consist of seven episodes and will feature never-before-heard archival interviews with John Wayne, Katharine Hepburn, Henry Fonda, James and more. Stewart, Woody Strode, and Ford himself.
According to TCM, Mankiewicz “stripped away the myths to reveal Ford’s brilliance, as well as the often ugly and uncomfortable truths about his life and films, and whether it is possible to truly separate art from art.” “We will ask the following questions.”
“John Ford is a volatile person, which makes sense given his stature, but stereotypes about Ford are incomplete,” the host said in a statement. “He was a man defined by contradictions. He respected the military and envied those who served but defied authority. Ford became known as one of Hollywood’s leading conservatives. However, one of his best films is “ grapes of wrath, one of classic Hollywood’s most progressive films. And while he preached loyalty, he frequently berated and belittled the actors, especially his most famous lead, John Wayne, during the making of the film.
“Despite all this, Ford was also thoughtful, playful and a true artist. The conspiracy thickens I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out what’s true and what’s not about John Ford. Getting to the bottom of John Ford wasn’t easy, but as you can hear, it was worth the journey. ”
The podcast will also discuss Ford being sent to Normandy Beach by the US military in 1944 to film D-Day and make a local film detailing the invasion. Does that movie exist? Mankiewicz went to Europe to find out the truth. (His June 6, the date of his podcast’s premiere, marks his 80th anniversary of D-Day.)
To present “Deciphering John Ford,” TCM will co-host with his grandson Dan Ford on June 5th and will air four of the director’s films. The next day will feature a 24-hour marathon of World War II-inspired films.
Sunday afternoon at the TCM Classic Film Festival. searchers (1956) will be shown at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theater with a 70mm world premiere restoration by Warner Bros. and the Film Foundation.
