In the 2016 film class, “Accountant” was a wild card.
It told the original story for adults and infiltrated family-friendly intellectual property derivatives that crowded the top of the box office charts. And it was similar to the durable kind of man-on-a-mission action thriller, but it had an absurd, willing twist.
The audience replied. “Accountant” surpassed theatre expectations, earning $155.5 million worldwide (according to Box Office Mojo), and was the first rental film of 2017 (by comscore) ahead of “Moana”, “Wonder Woman” and “Rogue One: Star Wars Story.”
Nine years later, the studio change, sequel “The Accountant 2” arrived on Friday, with Affleck and the original cast (Jon Bernthal, JK Simmons, Cynthia Addai-Robinson) returning. In two conversations, one took place in the southwest in March, before the film's premiere, and the other earlier this month, Affleck, O'Connor and Dubuque discussed retrieving the rights of the story, the definition of success, and the third film's potential ideas.
These are excerpts from the conversation.
Bill, you wrote the script for the first “Accountant” independently before the actor or director was involved. Where did the main character, Christian Wolf, come from?
