Growing up in the Netherlands with Ghanaian roots, Afia’s artistry reflects a beautiful blend of Afrobeat, R&B, and neo-soul, demonstrating the interconnectedness of the African diaspora. This feature explores her background, creative processes, musical philosophy, and insights into becoming a successful artist. Afia tapped with me live from Paris for this story and talked about her latest release, “Drink Watermelon (H302),” featuring Brazilian artists and others. After the summary, check out the complete interview video below!!!

The meaning behind “Afia Anim”

The name of Afia Anim is more than just a label. It is a reflection of her legacy and inner self. “Afia” is her Ghana Day name given to those born on Friday. The name means “sick-free” rooted in ideas of healing and forgiveness. The theme is at the heart of her life and artistry. Her last name is translated into Ghana’s “face,” which she poeticly calls it “face.”A healing face. ” For AFIA, her name reminds me of her daily mission to heal through music and personal growth.

Cultural significance of Ghana’s day name

Ghanaian culture awards the name of the day according to the date of birth, which brings deep cultural significance. Afia finds joy and inspiration in the meaningful connection that her name gives her roots and the healing powers she expresses in her artwork.

From corporate lawyers to musicians: A journey of change

Beginning as a lawyer

AFIA began his professional life in the Netherlands under employment law. This is a tough role that focuses on workplace issues and safety. She became the lawyer her family dreamed of as she navigating Amsterdam’s challenging legal landscape during the onset of the pandemic. This is the experience that shaped her views on justice and social issues.

Calling music

Despite her success, Afia felt the music calling her. Growing up immersed in Ghana’s high life, 90’s hip-hop and R&B, music sung in the choir was an ever-present part of her life. During the Covid-19 lockdown, she stirred her to write and share her feelings through songs, especially the black community. music, She says“”Called“She stepped beyond the legal world and into her true identity as an artist.

Overcoming the fear of pursuing passion

As an independent artist with no stable income, it was difficult to leave a safe career to embrace music. However, Afia felt sacredly guided and supported by her community through this transition. Maintaining her legal licence as a fallback gave her peace of mind, but her heart belonged to music and healing.

Creation and story behind Drink Watermelon H302

Inspiration from nature and self-care

One of Afia Anim’s most famous songs, Drinking watermelon H302born from a mild summer day in Amsterdam, it beautifully embodies self-care, hydration and adoption of an African identity. Inspired by a tropical fruit plate made up of watermelon, rambutan and grapes, she is deeply connected to the natural and healing powers of water-rich fruit.

The importance of watermelon and H302

Watermelons, often unfairly stereotyped, especially in the experiences of African Americans, are reclaimed in AFIA songs as symbols of sweetness and health. The mystical “H302” in the title refers to structured or living water present in fruits, symbolizing vitality and healing. This concept encourages listeners to explore new dimensions of self-care and energy healing.

Afrobeat, Caribbean rhythm, and soul fusion

This track combines the steamy atmosphere of the Caribbean with the Caribbean, evoking warmth and sunny energy intended to nourish the body and mind. It is especially perfect for those with dark skin who live in a sunny climate like the Netherlands. The song was quickly composed and captured the essence of the moment. This is a rare story about Afia’s artistic intuition and depth.

Cross-cultural cooperation: Connection with Brazilian artist Maya

Find the spirit of the musicians

While preparing the project in Brazil, AFIA and her team discovered MayaA Brazilian singer whose vision, energy and message are aligned. Mayan inclusion brought layers of authentic Brazilian Portuguese and Afro-Brazilian culture Drinking watermelon H302enriches its multicultural resonance.

A coincidence of creative sync

Mayan contributions – The poetic bridge on light through stained glass windows mistakenly tightens the sacred geometric theme of one of the AFIA healing shows, symbolizing multidimensional healing and interconnectivity. This stunning synchrony highlights the way music transcends boundaries and connects creators mentally without previous acquaintances.

The power of multilingualism and cultural fusion

Music as a bridge between African diaspora communities

Accepting the emotional depths of Afrobeat and Neosaurus
