Early attendees at this year’s Tribecafe Stage will be “New York State of Mind” with the premiere of the HBO Billy Joel documentary set as opener.
Emmy Award winners Susan Lacey and Jessica Levin, a two-part film entitled “Billy Joel: And That Goes,” is set to perform at Beacon Theatre on June 4th.
“For nearly 25 years, the Tribecafe Stability celebrated an artist who gives New York a heart and soul. At the opening night of the 2025 festival, we are excited to celebrate Billy Joel, the artist who embodied that spirit.”
The film producer, who founded the festival with Robert De Niro in 2002, said the project was “a great way to start celebrating creativity and inspiration this year.”
Described as “exploring the vast portraits of Billy Joel’s life and music, the love, loss and personal struggles that inspire his songwriting,” the documentary promises “unprecedented access to unprecedented performances, home films and personal photos” of the five-time Grammy Award-winning recipient known as “Piano Man.”
“And it also features extensive interviews with the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers behind hit songs such as Just The Way You Are,” “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me,” and 1983’s “Uptown Girl.”
“We are grateful for Billy Joel’s trust in us. “For decades, this film has been the venue for so many historic musical events, and there is no place for this film to premiere than the Beacon Theatre, a city of so much importance to Billy Joel.”
The Tribeca Festival 2025 is scheduled to take place throughout New York City from June 4th to 15th.
