Despite its fantasticity, some films fail box offices and are ignored when they make their big screen debuts, but are later rediscovered by new audiences and become cult classics.
Here we present five Bollywood films that I’ve found an audience ever since I left the cinema.

Nayak: The Real Hero (2001)

Remake of Tamil’s blockbuster Mudhalvanthe film follows a journalist who became the state’s prime minister for a day. It was a box office failure, but later achieved cult status after his television debut. A sequel is currently under construction.
Tumbbad (2018)

This great folk horror film struggled at the box office due to poor marketing, unique style and complex themes. However, it found viewers through the OTT platform and received a theatrical re-release, becoming the most successful re-release in Indian cinema history.

No smoking (2007)

The thriller was unable to influence the theatre due to its mixed review and its dark tone, and only spent 3 crores ($350K) against a budget of 20 crores ($2.3 million). However, word of mouth helped to gain cult status and is now considered one of the best Indian thrillers ever made.
Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota (2018)

This action comedy about a man who can’t feel pain had a hard time finding an audience due to poor marketing and limited releases. Nevertheless, it received critical acclaim and after being released on the OTT platform, it became a cult classic. Today it is considered one of the best martial arts films made in India.

Manorama 6ft under (2007)

Directed by Navdeep Singh, the film follows an amateur detective investigating murders in a remote village. It was very well received, but due to its slow, unconventional story, it failed to connect with the viewers. However, after being aired on television, it gained cult status and is now widely regarded as a must-see.
