What’s the name? : Recently, I have been consciously trying to escape judging books with their names and bands, but I have steadily and often failed. But this leaves a lot of opportunities for fun surprises, so one is six, right? The latest in these lovely revelations is Psychofunkyrough (He may also be known simply as psycho-funky, but that’s not known). A new 11-song soft indie pop collection, Long Wave Draftclever, sometimes interesting, far outweigh the name of the project. The specific highlights here are “every little task”, “long-term waves”, “no one cares.” Find this quiet gem at Psychofunkyrough.bandcamp.com.
Poet and Picker: Arfus Records He’s spreading his wings again, but this time there’s a new single from Johann Greco. I was delighted and surprised to hear this new song, “Do everything I can,” which I used to be new to Greco. And if you’re in the market for fresh songs that sound like they’ve been poured directly into the sidewalk on Sunday mornings by Grafar Kris Kristofferson, this is you. Greco’s first solo album, title I’m hopelessIt is scheduled for release courtesy of Arfus on May 28th, but it is likely that this song and other singles have been released. Look for this on all major streaming services. If you can’t find them, put all these people in the bug via facebook.com/johanngreco, instagram.com/johanngreco and arfusrecords.com.
This is Johnny! : Johnny Fallon We will release our next full-length album Tell me to hell I haven’t come, On May 30th, however, their first single, “Dog Flesh,” is now available. This is a wonderful theatrical track, which is several compositional steps on top of the group’s previous works. The entire album will definitely be a little darker, so prepare yourself. Find this on major streaming services and celebrate with Johnny Fallon on Thursday, April 3rd, Flicker Theatre and Bar, or on Friday, April 4th, at the University of Georgia and State University-owned radio station WGUR 95.3 FM (aka 95.3 The Noise) in Milledgeville The sound of spring Festival. Songs for Wide Awake Dogs: Athens Pop Super Group Dog person (Lauren Gregg, Jay Domingo, Steve Hendriksen, Gray Reilly, Robbee Cucchiaro) released their first full-length album, and in fact, they released their first recorded music in nearly three years. These nine songs were recorded and mixed by Vic Fischer on Studio 1093, and run along the familiar indie pop aesthetics that would have been at home on the old Kindercore label. The band will perform live at the Foxglove Plant Bar (1063 Baxter St. Suite 600) for a tape release show on May 2nd. For more information, see dogperson.dog. If you want to jump straight in and play, head to dogperson.bandcamp.com.
9 from one night: Hot in the heels of her new EP release show Please protect me, Julia Barfield We have released a live recording of the release show itself. Recorded on February 21st with a Hender Shot, it is nine songs in length, making it a great companion piece for the new EP. She was attended this live performance by Matt Knox (bass), Brandon Steinhauer (lead guitar), Ian Cook (pedal steel) and Connor White (drums). Check out more at juliabarfield.bandcamp.com.
Some things: While we’re distracted Quentin’s Love I sneaked in some new songs. They “sleep in your smile” backed by “my little eyes.” The former is a very easy-going song with a keyboard refrain that will make a carnival, but he can throw a small rock guitar around the two-minute mark. The latter is very heavy, bass-oriented (or simply the bass is blown away), sounding much longer than just a half minute of running time, and is rather cinematic in the presentation.
