A few years ago, Jeanne Meyer was well known for Columbia Falls and the Canyon. She was a hungry horse hairdresser and later wrote a gossip column at Columbia Falls for some time under the guidance of then-Hungry Horse News Editor Brian Kennedy.
Kennedy often mentioned her in his columns, especially after chatting during his haircut.
In one conversation, Meyer (whose surname was a religion at the time) says she was trying to sell a pet rabbit named Starski, and Hatch accompanied it.
Those who remember the awful but popular detective show “Starski and Hatch” would be kidding.
“We laughed a lot,” Meyer recalled during his visit last week.
She still has a receipt for writing efforts, $15 from The Hungry Horse News.
Kennedy was in her 20s at the time, and Meyer was one of the few hairdressers who had cut men's hair. She started cutting men's hair when long hair was fashion, and the barber said he didn't want to cut long hair in the '70s.
Meyer moved to Post Falls, Idaho, where he set up a store there, cut his hair for another 30 years and wrote a gossip column for the newspaper. She also wrote several children's books along the way, known for her award-winning flowers that she grew up in her garden.
A few months ago, she returned to Columbia Falls to live with her granddaughter Jamie Griffiths and husband Ryan.
Meyer's husband has passed away and she says it's difficult to live alone. She is in her 80s and continues to work, but her doctor “had me stop the power walking,” she said.
Now she's in the house with her family and is bustling with activities that include two big dogs training to live with her cat.
