Kristen Stewart is making her feature film directorial debut Water Chronologyand now she shares why she pursued this deep personal project.

The film is a biographical drama based on a memoir of the same name by Lidia Yuknavitch. It follows an aspiring Olympic swimmer who escapes abusive family life thanks to a Texas scholarship, but later loses the scholarship due to addiction. She eventually finds comfort through her journey of writing and self-discovery, and eventually learns how to turn trauma into art. Kristen co-written the script with Lydia’s husband, film producer Andy Mingo.

“Being a woman is a truly violent experience,” Kristen began. It was when I was asked why I wanted to tell this story. “Even if you don’t have the extreme experiences that you portray in the film, or the extreme experiences that Lydia endures and comes out beautifully.”

“Women – not dramatic, they are just facts – we are secrets. We are walking through secrets.” She then reflected on how she feels that women are being seen in the world. “The thing,” continued Kristen, “We’ve always had a lot of violence, and that’s even in the images we consume.”
Kristen believes that women, or, as she described, “anyone who is open and bleeding, which is 50% of the population,” will truly resonate with the theme of the film, due to the many shared experiences that women dealt with as a group.

“The stories we tell ourselves are very important, that we can find your companions, that our stories can evolve constantly, that they can change every day, that there is no fixed state…that’s what keeps us thriving and moving forward.”
