Neil Young gave his first full show Friday night with special benefits from Lakefield College School in Ontario on campus grounds. It’s a frigid, rainy night, tickets cost over $1,500 and all the money heads towards the restoration of a 116-year-old cottage near the school.
Unlike his upcoming Love Earth tour with Chromes Hearts, this was a solo, acoustic show. The 18-song set was heavy by standards such as “Come Come A Time,” “Sugar Mountain,” “Heart of Gold,” “Helles,” “I Am a Child,” and “After the Gold Rush.” However, there were some surprises like “Love/Art Blues,” but he hasn’t been released since 2008. He also raised the 1988 CSNY super deep cut, “The Name of Love” for the first time since 2014.
Details from Rolling Stone
The most notable moment happened midnight when he played with a banjo tied up The old way This is my first time since the solo trance tour in 1983. It’s a sweet, loving ode to his eldest son, Zeke Young. “Why are you growing so fast, my boy?” he sings. “Oh, you better take your time/Why are you growing so fast/My son?”
A few hours before the concert, Young posted a vintage photo with Zeke and Zeke as toddlers along with her late father, sportswriter Scott Young. “Practice for Lakefield, I was playing ‘my boy’ thinking about my father,” he wrote. “I knew he’d heard this song. My dad is a great guy and Zeke is a great son. “My Boy” is my favorite recording of all I did. I love playing Ben Keith and Spooner Oldham.
The show ended with “The Old Man,” but a printed setlist on stage revealed that he was originally scheduled to return to “Slow Down Your Hate” and “Rockin” solo electric renditions. It is unclear why he cut the last two numbers, but it is possible that the disastrous weather played a role. (Young has barely refused to do indoor gigs due to community concerns. The only indoor day of his upcoming Love Earth tour will be July 13th at Adidas Arena in Paris.)
The Love Earth Tour will begin on June 18th in Rättvik, Sweden. The American leg begins on August 8th in Charlotte, North Carolina. Young hasn’t revealed exactly what he will be performing on tour, but we look forward to some selections from his upcoming albums. Talk to the tree.
