Construction of the $14.4 million food, beverage and entertainment center continues at the committee’s north site, with the project expected to be completed this fall.
The approximately 11,000 square feet of building will house Challenger Bingo and bring new foodservice options to the northern edge of the installation.
“If the building is handed over to MWR, it will take at least a month for the operation to be ready for an epic opening,” said Gary Houch, chief of the Department of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s business operations.
According to Haste, workers are set on the roof and preparing to continue working to dry the building, including glass, bricks, doors and roof. “After the building is dry, they turn on the air and try to adjust the building and follow up with the interior finish.”
At the groundbreaking ceremony of last year’s project, former Commander Garrison, Col. Brian Cozyn, said the center was MWR’s first major illicit fund construction project on redstones since Redstone Lane in 2005.
Challenger Bingo is currently located in 1500 buildings on Weeden Mountain Drive.
The four-person table, banquet-style at the Bingo Hall, will seat 328 patrons, while the existing hall can accommodate up to 225 people, MWR director Ed Nun said last year. The building has a kitchen, snack bar, office and storage space, with rendering showing external drop-off lanes with canopy.
