Portland's popular neighborhoods have noted that Hollywood Theatre renovations and film madness has become a film district as they move across the street.
Portland, Oregon – Northeast Sandy Boulevard still has an Old Hollywood feel, but now there are plans to make the area a new one again.
“We want the whole Hollywood area to be developed, and it seems there's more to happen here… I like it, but I especially like the films and theatres,” said Portland resident Dean Williams.
Hollywood Theatre is in the early stages of making the area a film district. This includes renovations to the theatre for almost a century.
“I think this is a great opportunity. People need to go out and enjoy their neighborhood. Everyone wants to see things revitalized right now,” said Melanie Kelly, who works nearby.
Doug White, executive director of Hollywood Theatre, told KGW the planning process is still in its early stages, “We imagine a vibrant hub of community life that brings film enthusiasts from across the region from now on.”
White went on to say he wanted to renovate the theatre and improve the film fan and the experience. One thing they plan is to take the building out across the street on Sandy Boulevard and move the film Madness, a separate video store.
“I think that's right. It's Hollywood. There was the Hollywood Theater here. I think it's a relic like this. I think it's a highlight of the entire district,” said Gracecrane, who works on the streets from the theatre.
The store is currently located in the Belmont area of southeast Portland. These plans include turning it into a world-class video rental store. It's not just movies you can rent. There is also a special screening room and restaurant with a bar.
Grace Crane, who works in the streets at Sizzle Pie, told people it's not easy to get through the neighborhood, but hopes that the charm of a slightly older Hollywood with a new look can fix it.
Meanwhile, White said he is still fundraising for the theater renovation, but renovations to the film's crazy new location have already begun.
