Happy New Year to everyone who submitted numbers 1 to 7 of the Pop Culture Challenge. As always, the goal is to come up with clever alternatives to the pop culture references in one of his Joe Eskenazi columns.
Challenge No.7 winner
My final pop culture venture came from this article. In it, Eskenazi referenced the San Francisco Unified School District’s payroll debacle, writing, “EM Power did for SFUSD what Jason Voorhees did for Camp Crystal Lake.” The winning entry was written by Wellington Jackson, who said, “EM Power did for SFUSD what Latrell Sprewell did for the Warriors’ Christmas party.” That act of genius on his part earned Wellington a mission for his local tote.
The entry “EMPower has done for SFUSD what Wormtongue did for King Theoden’s mental health” deserves special praise.
Challenge No.8
Our next pop culture challenge is from Eskenazi’s column about the upcoming 2024 election and the dynamics surrounding it. In describing how the city’s problems descended into chaos much more quickly than politicians expected, he quoted from the movie “Anchorman.” It got out of hand really quickly. ”
If you have a pop culture reference that describes how things get confusing quickly, or get confusing faster than expected, please fill out the form below. You may have a valuable Mission Local tote bag in your future that will be admired by your fellow readers.
