In an interview with ETimes, Rajat Kapoor said that producers still have “some courage” but the bigger problem is the distribution of films that may not have stars in them. In this regard, Mr. Rajat said OTT platforms “have not been very kind”. He said the platform only features “certain types” of movies, and is doing what studios and producers have done before, creating content with stars that have the potential to make big bucks. He said he was producing it. “OTT platforms are deciding what kind of movies we have to watch,” he said.
The actor and filmmaker said it was a “myth” that cinema had “moved to a better place” since the arrival of streaming platforms in the country. Rajat said OTT may have helped him in the first few years, but “it doesn’t help anymore.”
Mr. Rajat said platforms choose which side they want to be on, and of course “always on the side of money.” Furthermore, he added: “Who can blame them? And OTT has always been presented as if it’s big for the industry and the savior, but that’s a lie,” he added.
Rajat Kapoor made his feature directorial debut in 2003 with the National Award-winning ‘Raghu Romeo’ and went on to make films like ‘Mithya’, ‘Kadakh’ and ‘RK/RKay’. He is currently starring in the Disney Plus Hotstar series Lootere. The show will be directed by Hai Mehta and the filmmaker’s father Hansal Mehta will serve as the showrunner.
