Kelly Clarkson asked Brown, who played Randall Pearson in the NBC drama about changing his name as a teenager in Monday’s episode. Kelly Clarkson Show.
“I went by my middle name, I went to ‘Kelby’ until I was 16,” he replied. “My father, Sterling Brown Junior. My grandfather, Sterling Brown Senior. I am sterling Kelby Brown.”
Brown said he just wanted his identity.
“I wanted my name, but I felt that Sterling was like an old man’s name.” Paradise Starr told Clarkson. “But he passed away when I was 10, so I hadn’t heard him for five and a half years since I turned 16, so I asked people to call me Sterling because I wanted to hear that name again.”
Both Brown and Clarkson were visibly emotional, but she said, “It’s so sweet and beautiful.”

Brown told EW last month that of all episodes of his heartwarming and heartbreaking family show, there is one that people would most want to talk to him.
“‘Memphis’, episode 116, when William (Ron Cephas Jones) passed away,” Brown said. Randall always knows he’s adopted, but during the course of the series he discovers William is his biological father. “It’s a sensation, it bumps violently and violently.”

Brown said he and his former co-stars Mandy Moore (Rebecca) and Chris Sullivan (Toby) are about to discuss the episode in their rewatch podcast where family patriarch Jack (Milo Benchmilia) lost a tragic death.
“Different episodes hit different people in different ways,” Brown said. “And you’re always coming to you by people, and what I really get is more wanted than anything else. this is us Specifically, “Can you hug me?” And that’s the nicest thing. I think that was the gift of the show. We thought we had a show that allowed people to connect, especially in a world that feels very divided, that feels incredibly divided. ”
