The Netflix series, partially filmed at Martha's vineyard, will be released early next month.
“Forever,” an eight-episode series based on Judy Blume's novel of the same title, was released on May 8th. The final episode of the series was filmed at the vineyard last spring.
Last May, the film crew worked throughout Martha's vineyards, from Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs to the Steamboat Bureau terminal in Vineyard Haven. An open casting call was held, allowing many additional vineyards to be selected.
The vineyard episode was directed by seasonal resident Mara Block Akhir. She is a showrunner and executive producer.
The show is a contemporary view of the 1975 Blume story. In an interview with The Gazette last year, Brock Akil said she tried to bring the story to the present and feature a black protagonist. Brock Aquill also wanted to incorporate the island's rich black history into the filming process.
“The place is special, but it's special for black families,” she said. “It's a place where our kids experience freedom and independence, where they run around like little ones, and get the opportunity to be around town on their own, interact with each other and meet each other.”
Blume is a long-standing seasonal resident and executive producer of the project. It depicts forever young love and first experiences.
On the origins of the book, she wrote on her website:
