West Hollywood, California (KABC) – To enhance support for local businesses, the city of West Hollywood is offering free street parking in April as part of its “Wehappy Wednesdays” program.
“People need to patronize businesses, and that helps the economy,” said Genevieve Morrill, president and CEO of the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “The meter is free. The parking garage is a car park. All the parking lots are owned by the city and they really help others.”
The initiative, which was offered this Wednesday this month, doesn’t just provide free parking. Local businesses offer special promotions such as flowers, food and drinks, and home decorations.
“These restaurants will step up, help their first responders and give back to the community,” Morrill said. “We’ll come back to them, patronize their business, meet and have fun with your community members.”
“I think that’s a great idea. I know I work in hospitality, so if I’m out, I’m out a week,” said Matthew Irvin, general manager of 33 taps on Santa Monica Boulevard. “So you know, I definitely love it, so I think it’s a good time to just do a deal anytime and especially come out in West Hollywood.”
Some have noticed a decline in pedestrians around the city. Free parking is a huge incentive.
“I think that’s definitely an incentive to drive people out here,” said Thomas Toribolett, a West Hollywood resident. “There are so many cool shops and places to get in here, so people can’t really take their time to see and see.
More than 30 businesses in the city’s Design District, East Side, Rainbow District and Sunset Strip are participating in the initiative. Visitors can find the full list at wehochamber.com.
