Cody Johnson will be taking part in one of Nashville’s biggest television events tonight. New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash On CBS. Johnson, 36, will perform at the Whiskey River Saloon (part of Nashville’s Broadway area) during the special, but this won’t be just a random performance for the Texas native. Music Every time he takes to the City stage, he is reminded of how far he has come.
“I love playing here because I haven’t been accepted here forever,” Johnson told PopCulture.com before the performance. “Whether you’re an independent artist or you’re from Texas, there’s always been a stigma that ‘you’ll never make it in Nashville.’ With business relationships and such a growing career, I’m in this town where everyone said I would never make it.
“And I ended up sitting down and playing on Broadway, and I wasn’t the kind of guy who played on Broadway until I moved from Kentucky to Nashville and got a record deal. I was a honky-tonk guy in Texas. I don’t know anything about the strip here in Tennessee, but I’m really looking forward to it.”
The CBS broadcast capped off a big year for Johnson, who released his latest album. leather, in November. The “Till I Can’t” and “Me and My Kind” singer has traveled the world with Luke Combs, and it has truly put his success into perspective.
“Well, the big moment was being able to go to Australia and New Zealand with Luke Combs and hit it off,” Johnson said. “And the biggest moment of that was when we were there, realizing that people from all over the world were on completely different continents and could have gone to Asia or Antarctica faster than America. Not only did they do it, but people knew all the words.”I was mad that they didn’t play any of the songs that I had written while I was working with publishers and publishing deals here in Nashville. “We’re friends and I’m really grateful to Luke. He’s done so much for me. Another big thing is that we used ‘The Painter’ as the start of our album release. It was released.” leather, we’re starting to outgrow the venues we’ve been playing here in the U.S., and we’re starting to outgrow the scale we thought we’d never grow. And that’s exactly the kind of growth model artists everywhere want. ”
Johnson has come a long way since his humble days in a Texas honky-tonk, but don’t think he’s reached his peak. Mr Johnson expressed his determination to further expand his reach as he discussed his 2024 goals in the spirit of his New Year’s special. He is looking not just to his 2024, but also to 2025.
“I’m looking forward to seeing what I do as a professional in 2024 and what I do in 2025 take shape,” Johnson said. “We have a deluxe edition of the album. leatherwill be released in 2024. There will be a lot of new music, a lot of streaming, and a lot of new fans. Because of that record and the hard work Warner Nashville put into it, we have many new opportunities.
“We’re going to go to Canada, we’re going to go to Brazil, we’re going to rock up 25 years, we’re going to go to England, we’re going to go to Australia, we’re going to do things like follow in Luke Combs’ footsteps. To be honest, what I’m saying right now is… The doors that he opened for us really took this career that I’ve worked so hard for to the next level.”
But Johnson, whose song “The Painter” recently hit 40 million Spotify streams, isn’t overly focused on his career. He has made it his personal goal to spend his off-time with his family (including his wife Brandi and two daughters) and his passion for roping.
“I have some team candidates on my list, some individual candidates I’d like to win, and I’d like to spend more quality time at home,” Johnson told PopCulture.com. “It’s not about, ‘Let’s stay home and get through the week and rush out.’ It’s about really having fun and taking a breather. I’ve been doing this for 17 years and I think that’s important. It’s really important. That’s it.”
